GENERAL INFORMATION

The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1948 as a branch of the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak University, later called Comenius University in Bratislava. Then in 1959, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Philosophy merged, which led to the foundation of a new university in Eastern Slovakia, called Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Kosice.

The Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Kosice closely co-operates with many significant universities and institutions in: Prague, Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Padova, Essen, Giessen, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zürich, Turku, Oulu, Salamanca, Krakow and others.

As a state university Pavol Jozef Šafárik University functions under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. It is accredited according to the rules and regulations of the Higher Education Act of the Slovak Republic.

In those professions where the conditions of education in Slovakia are identical with those in the European Union, which have already been recognized (medical and dental doctors), the member states of the European Union are obliged to accept the diplomas issued in Slovakia, irrespective of the language of instruction.

The Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Kosice teaching of medical students began in September 1948, and since then it has educated over 12 thousand of them for their prospective profession. Since 1992, it enables international students to complete their medical studies in the English language - young people from about fifty countries of the world avail themselves of this opportunity at present. The diplomas awarded to the UPJS MF´s graduates are recognized in all countries of the European Union and in most of the federal states of USA.

The history of the Faculty is closely linked with the development of human medicine in eastern Slovakia after World War II. The emergence of the Faculty of Medicine in Kosice as a branch of the Slovak University in Bratislava in the year 1948 was a response to the then shortage of medical doctors in the region of Eastern Slovakia. Establishment of the Faculty of Medicine not only meant the beginnings of modern medical education in this area of Slovakia, but also the development of higher education in the region.

The Faculty of Medicine consists of approximately 70 units – institutes, departments, scientific research and experimental workplaces, and special-purpose facilities. Its modern high-rise building is located in close proximity to the L. Pasteur University Hospital, where students take the bulk of their practical training. Its teaching base represents a several medical institutions that allow students a direct contact with patients and employment of modern treatment methods, so teaching represents a unique link theory with practice.

UPJS MF defended its position in a complex accreditation in the highest category „A“(by obtaining a score of 3.95 out of max. 4.0). Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Kosice is an agile institution that enjoys its unique position in the development of medical science and in education of physicians in the field of human medicine not only for covering the societal demand of Slovakia, but also in many other countries of the world - Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Australia. It is very successful in fulfilling its basic social mission - educating high-quality physicians and implementing top-quality medical research. Quality teaching at this Faculty provides a very good basis for employment of its graduates in the labor market.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH

The English program is 19 years old, and over 800 international students have successfully completed their studies and earned a degree in the field of General medicine or Dentistry.

The Faculty of Medicine provides university study for international students in two medical branches:

General Medicine-the courselasts 6years (12terms), Dental Medicine - the course lasts 6 years (12 terms)

Both - General Medicine and Dental Medicine - are available for international students with a good command of English. The Faculty of Medicine is closely connected with the Teaching Hospital in Kosice, in which practical education in clinical disciplines is carried out.

The last years of study are concerned with practical training in hospitals and health care institutes. The study is completed by the state examinations before the Board of the Faculty Experts. Graduates are awarded the academic title "Doctor of General Medicine", abbreviated “MUDr.” (Equivalent to M.D. degree) and “Doctor of Dental Medicine”, abbreviated “MDDr.” (Equivalent to D.M.D.).

GRADUATE OF GENERAL MEDICINE PROFILE

The graduate of General Medicine has adequate theoretical knowledge of both theoretical, pre-clinical subjects, and clinical disciplines. In their practical training they will learn basic preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. In their post-graduate education they become specialist in primary care and may attain qualifications to work as a physician in any medical specialism. The study of General Medicine lasts for 6 years and its graduates are awarded the degree of "Doctor of General Medicine" (MUDr.), which automatically entitles them to work not merely in any country of the European Union, but almost all the world.

GRADUATE OF DENTAL MEDICINE PROFILE

The graduate of Dental medicine has adequate theoretical knowledge of theoretical, pre-clinical, and clinical disciplines of Dental medicine. During practical exercises in the subjects of Dental medicine, they will learn basic preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures and will become qualified to independently perform basic practical procedures. The study of Dental medicine lasts for 6 years and its graduates are awarded the degree of "Doctor of Dental Medicine" (MDDr.), which is also recognized in any country of the European Union and in the majority of other countries.
